Lebanon army defuses bomb near base
(AFP) -12 June 2008
TRIPOLI, Lebanon - The Lebanese army defused a roadside bomb on Thursday near a northern military base, a security official said.
"A special bomb disposal unit defused the bomb, which was placed on the side of the road some three kilometers (two miles) away from Qleiat airport, where the army has a base," the source told AFP.
The device, hidden under a bucket and weighing two-five kilogrammes (4.5-11 pounds), was similar to one that killed a soldier at an army intelligence post in the same region on May 31.
The airport is used solely by the army. It is located near the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp, which was devastated during a three-month siege last year in which the army eventually vanquished gunmen from an Al-Qaeda inspired extremist group.
Shaker al-Abssi, the leader of the group called Fatah al-Islam, vowed in January to seek revenge on the army.
