If Iran acquires nuclear weapons, the world would be forever changed, warned Howard L Bremen, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee at a hearing on Iran on Wednesday.Bremen claimed that Iran’s possession of nuclear capability would be transformative in the Middle East and beyond, increasing its “destructive leverage” in international diplomacy, even vis a vis the United States and the West. Sunni Arab states would be intimidated, and would be more likely to follow Iran’s lead. Achieving nuclear status would exponentially increase Iran’s influence and the appeal of fundamentalism throughout the Islamic world, he added. Bremen warned that the deadline for solving “this looming problem” is fast approaching as Iran daily inches closer to the point where it can produce enough weapons-grade uranium to make a nuclear bomb. While no one knows precisely when that will happen, most experts say it will be soon, while some predict it would be as early as the end of this year. For Israel, the Congressman argued, the threat posed by a nuclear Iran would be “existential.” He cited the announcement by Tehran that a long-range missile tested this week was capable of carrying a nuclear payload to Israel. He said the US needs to use every diplomatic and economic tool available to steer Iran away from developing nuclear weapons capability. (Source)
