US to give Israel "security package"

Tel Aviv-Jun 3, 2008

The United States is expected to announce a 'security package' for Israel during Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's current visit to Washington, the Israeli Yediot Ahronot daily reported Tuesday.

According to the Israeli daily, the principal issues Olmert will discuss with administration officials will 'address the various scenarios that have been analysed recently with the goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.'

The 'security package' Israel will receive will enhance Israel's defence against long-range missiles, and includes radar, as well as cruise missiles and a permanent hook-up to a worldwide warning system that identifies whenever a ballistic missile is launched from anywhere.

Olmert will also ask President George W Bush for the F-22, considered to be the leading and most advanced war plane of its type in the world and designed to be all but invisible to radar.

The Israeli leader will meet Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday, and will hold talks with Bush on Wednesday. (M&C)
