Wade: Hamas May Release Gilad Shalit to His Custody

By VOA News 13 June 2008

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade says the Palestinian militant group Hamas may release an Israeli prisoner to his custody.
A spokesman for Mr. Wade, El Hadji Amadou Sall, told VOA Friday Hamas agreed it would unilaterally honor a cease-fire with Israel and could release the captive Israeli soldier.
Earlier this week, President Wade called on Hamas and Israel to start a cease-fire. Egypt has been brokering peace talks between the two sides, but there has not been a deal.
Israeli officials have not commented on Mr. Wade's remarks.
Separately this week, Mr. Wade met with envoys from Hamas and the more secular Palestinian movement, Fatah, in an attempt to lay the groundwork for eventual peace with Israel.
Hamas ended more than 40 years of Fatah's unchallenged leadership of the Palestinian people with parliamentary victories in 2006. Hamas fighters then wrested power from Fatah in the Gaza Strip in June 2007.
