Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is in Moscow to seal an agreement to buy Russian weapons and military equipment. The South American leader is expected to sign the deal with President Medvedev on Tuesday. The two leaders will also discuss energy ties.
A number of preliminary arms contracts have already been confirmed and many are now being finalised.Venezuela intends to buy tanks, submarines, helicopters and airplanes. Agreements for the creation of maintenance centres will also be signed. As for the energy sphere, major Russian companies like Gazprom and Lukoil want closer ties with their Venezuelan counterparts. Gazprom intends to take an active part in the construction of the Trans-American gas pipeline at the Venezuela-Brazil section.
