Russian troops quit Gori in Georgia
Sun, 17 Aug 2008
Russian troops are pulling out of Georgia's Gori town having been replaced by peacekeepers in accordance with a Moscow-Tbilisi peace deal. Though regular Russian troops are leaving the area, it is not yet clear when the Russian pullout, required under a French-brokered peace deal between Moscow and Tbilisi, will be completed or what the plan is for Russian troops occupying other areas of Georgia. Russia launched a military intervention against Georgia on August 8 after a Georgian attack on the separatists in South Ossetia. Moscow has accused Tbilisi of the genocide of ethnic Ossetians, while Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said Russia was carrying out a full-blown invasion. (Source)
