Assad to relay Sarkozy's message to Iran

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says he has been asked by his French counterpart to relay an EU message to Iran about its nuclear issue.
President al-Assad told Al-Jazeera that he would relay President Nicolas Sarkozy's message in order to help resolve Tehran's nuclear standoff with the West.
Washington, Tel Aviv, and their European allies accuse Tehran of pursuing a military nuclear program. Tehran insists its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity and is in line with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
President al-Assad said the message includes a group of 'principles' that seek to determine if Iran is conducting its nuclear activities 'outside the relevant international agreements', DPA reported. Al-Assad said Iran's nuclear intentions could only be judged by the UN nuclear watchdog.
The most recent International Atomic Energy Agency report concluded that there is no link between the use of nuclear material and the 'alleged studies' of weaponization attributed to Iran by Western countries.
President al-Assad added that European leaders do not 'seek to alienate Syria from Iran, but rather how Syria can help in this respect'.
