Pakistani security authorities discover containers carrying radioactive material in the southern port city of Karachi, a media report says. The two containers were found buried in an area owned by the Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDC) in Pakistan's industrial city of Karachi, Dawn News reported. Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority ( PNRA) inspectors had detected radioactivity from the containers, the report said adding that they were waxed and sealed so posed little risk. The channel quoted PNRA sources as saying that the material might be of Soviet origin and could have been lying in the area for decades. However, it added, it could not be known exactly how much material was buried at the oil and gas facility, because the OGDC had denied any knowledge of it. The site where the containers were unearthed was in the use of a Soviet oil exploration company until the late 1960s when the firm wrapped up its operations in Pakistan. According to the channel, the PNRA is making efforts for the safe disposal of the material. (Source)
