Iran test-fires missiles in Persian Gulf

Navy Commander Morteza Safari

Iran has test-fired a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which has a range that puts Israel within reach, state media said. The missile, said to have a range of 2,000 km was one of nine launched from a remote desert site, BBC reported.

Iran has tested the Shahab-3 before, but the latest test comes amid rising tensions with the US and Israel over Iran's nuclear programme and is regarded by many as a warning message.

"We are ready to defend the integrity of the Iranian nation," the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' air force, Brigadier General Hoseyn Salami, said.

The firing comes a day after an aide to the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Iran would "set fire" to Israel and the US Navy in the Gulf as its first response to any American attack over its nuclear program. (Source)
